Unlike the FAFSA, which has a federal deadline of June 30, the CSS Profile has no single national deadline. Every school that requires it sets its own — and those deadlines are often much earlier than students expect, particularly for Early Decision applicants.
The rule of thumb: submit your CSS Profile at the same time as your application, or earlier. At several schools, the CSS Profile is due before the application itself.
How CSS Profile deadlines are structured
CSS Profile deadlines follow your application round. The three main scenarios:
Early Decision (ED I)
Most schools with ED programs require the CSS Profile by the same date as the ED application — typically November 1. A handful of schools (including Duke and Vanderbilt) require it earlier. Since ED is a binding commitment, schools need to finalize financial aid packages quickly, which is why the CSS Profile deadline arrives so fast.
Early Decision II (ED II)
Usually due January 1 or January 15, aligned with the ED II application deadline.
Early Action (EA)
Most EA programs are non-binding and have more flexibility. CSS Profile deadlines for EA typically align with the EA application date — usually November 1 or November 15. Check each school individually since EA policies vary widely.
Regular Decision (RD)
CSS Profile deadlines for Regular Decision typically fall between February 1 and February 15, though some schools set them as early as January 1. Do not assume the CSS Profile deadline matches the application deadline — they are often different by several weeks.
Why missing the CSS Profile deadline matters
Missing the CSS Profile deadline is not the same as missing the application deadline. A late application means you may not be considered for admission. A late CSS Profile means you may not be considered for institutional grant aid — the school-funded scholarships and grants that significantly reduce net cost at private colleges.
Many private colleges award institutional aid on a first-come, first-served basis from a limited pool. Students who file late are not just deprioritized — they may receive no institutional aid at all for that year, regardless of their financial need.
How to find your school's specific CSS Profile deadline
There is no central database that lists every school's CSS Profile deadline in one place. The most reliable sources:
The school's financial aid website
Search "[school name] CSS Profile deadline" and go directly to the financial aid or financial aid forms page. Look for a section on financial aid deadlines or required documents.
The College Board's CSS Profile school list
You can find it at cssprofile.collegeboard.org — this lists which schools require the CSS Profile but does not always publish specific deadlines. Use it to confirm the school requires the CSS Profile, then go directly to the school's site for the date.
Your Common App or Coalition App
The financial aid section sometimes lists deadlines by school, though these are not always current.
When in doubt, call the financial aid office directly. Deadlines occasionally shift year to year.
CSS Profile deadlines for divorced or separated families
If your parents are divorced, separated, or never married and the school requires non-custodial parent information, there are effectively two CSS Profile deadlines — one for the custodial parent's submission and one for the non-custodial parent's separate profile. Both must be complete before the school's deadline. The non-custodial parent needs their own College Board account and cannot be rushed at the last minute.
Plan to submit the student's CSS Profile at least two weeks before the deadline to give the non-custodial parent time to complete their section. See our full guide to the CSS Profile for divorced parents for the complete process.
